My dad used to take us to Homer’s in the 1980’s on our way back from visiting his mom in a nursing home. The only ice cream (and one of few desserts) I ever saw him eat so it has special memories for me. But other than ordering it at restaurants around Chicagoland that carry Homer’s, I haven’t been back in 30 years.
Finally went on a perfect summer midweek afternoon with my mom. It was exactly like I remembered it. Super quaint / fun throw back. We had no wait and when the employee realized we were going to split a small, he said he could do a split small with half of two flavors! I was impressed with this option and with his excellent service.
We ordered the seasonal peach and the pecan praline. Peach was good but the pecan praline was superb (I’m biased - it has their vanilla as the base and I love vanilla). Nice small pieces of nuts not huge chunks.
I used the bathroom and was pleasantly surprised that it was perfectly clean, had paper, and worked well, despite several negative Yelp reviews.
Now I just wonder why it took me 30 years to return. I can’t wait to go back!
Homers, a charming restaurant and ice cream parlor, offers a very friendly and open atmosphere. The made-from-scratch strawberry milkshake was a delightful treat, boasting deliciousness in every sip. On the restaurant side, the lukewarm fries initially raised an eyebrow, but my granddaughter devoured every single one, making them a hit in her book.
The real beef chili cheese hotdog was quite delicious, although the cheese and chili with big beans weren't personal favorites. Despite these preferences, the overall experience was great, and my granddaughter and I had a lovely time at Homers. A four-star gem for its warm ambiance and tasty treats.
The burger was decently good. However it wasn't anything spectacular. Fries on the other hand were great but I would skip on the cheese. The food was served quickly however they did forget the cheese for the fries. Staff was quick to fix the issue and were overall friendly. In general it's a decent stop for a quick and affordable bite.
Honestly, I think Hartigans down in Wilmette has wayy better ice cream. over here the amount they give is too little. however this is still a historical spot with cool staff and a great place to hang out with friends. maybe their actual food items are better.
Although mostly hiring kids these days, this place has always been built on strong relationships and GREAT ice cream. Their food has also always been fresh and worth every penny. Ill be coming and supporting this place for the rest of my life. Can’t wait to see if they get any renovations done!
I stopped by for the first time and was indecisive between the banana macadamia chip or cappuccino chip but they were out on the banana soooooooooooo cappuccino it was. Glad I went with the cappuccino chip because it was so good and had the perfect amount of chocolate chips in it. Loved the coffee taste. I’m definitely coming back to try the banana macadamia!
Great place - north shore staple, no question. But…recently changed peppermint stick ingredients and the classic beautiful light pink color is gone. Now more like vanilla ice cream with a subtle hint of boring peppermint. Heart broken.
Find your favorite flavor but beware it's Quality Ice Cream they serve here & your taste buds will be the judge & like me you will be back for more. I have never had a meal here just Ice cream. A real treat.
